BOLSTER - Bridging Organizations and marginalized communities for Local Sustainability Transitions in EuRope :

BOLSTER is a Horizon Europe project funded by the European Commission's CINEA grant authority, which aims to understand how marginalized communities are affected by European Green Deal (EGD) policies and to see whether their involvement in decision-making processes increases support for transition plans.

"No European citizen should be disadvantaged by the European Green Deal. Research shows that transition policies mainly benefit already privileged citizens and often tend to reproduce social inequalities. Moreover, there is growing polarization towards transition plans."

The BOLSTER project will provide new scientific data on decarbonization transition strategies and how they relate to different dimensions of inequality, such as gender, race, age and social class. It will conceptualize the principle of leaving no one behind by developing participatory governance models and transition guidelines based on climate justice and gender equality.

Analysis of 7 European regions: the role of the Smart City Institute

To this end, the project is analyzing how part of the European Green Deal - the Just Transition mechanism - is being implemented in seven European regions, including Hainaut, Belgium. The Smart City Institute is in charge of the Hainaut case study, in which we are engaging with local stakeholders through academic interviews to understand just transition processes, and by organizing multi-stakeholder forums to hear directly from citizens about their perceptions of this process.
