Smart City Strategy: The Practical Handbook for your municipality
On 19 September 2017, for the Smart City Wallonia trade fair, the Smart City Institute will officially publish its 1st Practical Guide for municipalities. Objective: support them in their sustainable and smart transition approach.
A need for guidance
- Belgian cities feel unprepared facing the Smart City challenge and find it difficult to grasp;
- While more than 80% of Flemish and Brussels municipalities consider the Smart City concept to be adapted to their territory, in Wallonia, barely 45% of the municipalities affirm this;
- In 2016, only 13% of Belgian municipalities had implemented a strategy in this area;
- Finally, the respondents felt that it is essential to train and inform the various stakeholders to the Smart City dynamic and its challenges, asking in particular for a manual with concrete recommendations on the subject.
- These observations highlighted a real need for guidance within our municipalities. This is what motivated the Smart City Institute, with the support and expertise of its partners, to write a Practical Handbook for Belgian cities and municipalities.
The added value of the book
Nathalie Crutzen, Academic director of the Smart City Institute: "As the academic Smart Region reference specialized in these questions, our ambition is to regularly equip cities and municipalities with tools enabling them to transform themselves and integrate the key issues of the Smart City. Our book suggests a reflection process in several phases, including examples, advice and concrete tools.”
A free downloadable handbook
On the occasion of the Smart City Wallonia exhibition and in line with the Smart Region dynamic, which aims to strengthen and encourage Smart City projects in Wallonia, the institute has decided to offer, with the support of Digital Wallonia, a printed copy of the Practical Handbook to each Walloon municipality.
However, all the actors of the sustainable and smart city (administrations, companies, citizens, startups, etc.) are not left out since the handbook can also be downloaded for free in digital format!
