In Wallonia as elsewhere, mobility is a key issue for municipalities and cities, from a societal, economic, environmental and health point of view. In a recent survey, the Walloon municipalities also affirmed that Smart Mobility - accessibility, mobility and transport - is the #1 Smart City axis that can effectively contribute to their attractiveness and dynamism (Smart City 2019 Barometer).

A question then emerges: how can we guarantee citizens sustainable, efficient, environmentally friendly and healthy mobility, while taking advantage of the new innovations available?

In order to get a clearer picture and to support the key mobility stakeholders in this reflection, the Smart City Institute publishes a new Practical Handbook : a compilation of knowledge and good practices concerning the latest developments and advances in the field of smart mobility.

Smart Mobility - A multitude of solutions

Electric or shared vehicles, connectivity, automation, ... The latest innovations in mobility in recent decades are helping to change our vision of mobility, but also the way we move around. These innovations can have many applications, whether to improve the energy efficiency of transport, to support behavioural change, or to support mobility patterns in a territory.

Smart Mobility, or intelligent and sustainable mobility, brings together all these solutions aimed at making the most optimal use of infrastructure, vehicles and equipment to facilitate the mobility of people and goods. Smart Mobility is therefore a broad concept that facilitates the sustainable transition of a territory by optimising transport services, while taking into account the technological, societal, economic and environmental challenges.

This new handbook therefore explores in detail these solutions and their application to the different existing modes of transport, while also focusing on two fundamental aspects of smart mobility: intermodality and multimodality. Special attention is also paid to spatial and urban planning, as well as the governance of mobility in Wallonia, which are essential pillars in the implementation of more sustainable mobility.
