Biography

Benoit Ruysschaert is a doctoral researcher who began his research at the Smart City Institute in mid-September 2021. His academic journey started in 2016 when he embarked on a bachelor's degree in business engineering at the University of Hasselt. To further specialize in sustainability management, Benoit decided to pursue a master's degree in 'Sustainable Performance Management' at HEC Liège. During this program, he discovered the work of the Smart City Institute during their annual seminar on 'Sustainable and Smart Territories,' dedicated to second-year master's students at HEC Liège. Benoit also collaborated with the SCI for his research thesis, which aimed to explore management control models used in cities like Liège and Hasselt for managing projects in the "Smart Environment."

Now that he has successfully completed his master's degree, Benoit continues his research in the form of a joint Ph.D. between the Smart City Institute (HEC Liège/ULiège) and the University of Hasselt. His research focuses on strategies for cities in the context of their transition to a circular economy. This research is supervised by Professor Nathalie Crutzen (Smart City Institute) and Professor Tom Kuppens, an expert in circular economy at UHasselt (CMK: Centre for Environmental Sciences).
